The notion that in 1945 British voters wanted Churchill to handle the war seems very silly. Weren't hasty demobilization and avoiding confrontation with the USSR over Eastern Europe a popular part of the Labour campaign?

The war was all but over in June 1945, and given that the foreign policies of both parties were more or less identical in spirit if not in detail then the election was wholly about domestic issues - a plebiscite on the previous thirty years of government, really.
