There's a new word: "pornword."

I can't believe there's an organization out there which employs a filter which can't tell the difference between "ass" and "classic". That is so dismally incompetent that I can't believe it.

Hm. Actually, I can. A computer and a smattering of visual basic in the wrong hands is a scary thing when combined with luddite managers who don't know any better.

Those of us who use nanny software to supervise our children won't be surprised. Some of these filters even work phonetically. The pages wouldn't load when I was searching for a hotel in Phuket, Thailand until I switched it off.

Hah, that is very funny. It does seem as though there are certain corners of the software industry in which standards are incredibly low. From what I've seen software for kids (or for parents with kids) seems to be one. Perhaps there just isn't enough money in it to attract competent developers?

Meanwhile I'm curious how one of these programs would deal with John Barth's The Sot-Weed Factor. It's full of relentlessly crude descriptions but they're phrased in seventeenth-century euphemisms such as "rogering."
