Interesting - I had never heard of the SF riot (and I'm embarrassed to say that I'd forgotten about the anniversary too). VE-Day is more famous for riots. Drunken Canadian troops tore through Aldershot smashing shops and cars. More ominously, demonstrations in Algeria protesting the reinstalled French presence were met with violence; thousands were ultimately killed.
