Not the Noel Coward Song

"Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other..." No, it's not Cole Porter either. it's Willie Nelson glossing Brokeback Mountain. Also featuring the line, "What did you think all them saddles and boots was about?" (Pause for chuckles all along Folsom Street.) Country music is more adventurous than it's given credit for. Not just Willie Nelson either.

I'm not sure if punkabilly counts, but I've always enjoyed the Reverend Horton Heat song "Cowboy Love".

Prejudice prevents me from seeing Brokeback Mountain, because I absolutely absolutely absolutely cannot stand Westerns. God hates cowboys.

Local talk radio this afternoon is debating whether the lyric is "fond of" or "fondle."

J. says, "Or 'Fonda'! It's Jane Fonda!"

Me, reading out more lyrics from the Guardian story:

"...There's many a strange impulse out on the plains of west Texas..."

J: "What are we talking about? I thought this was gonna be a Cheney story. This is so surreal..."

Oh, and that rhyme scheme isn't Mr. Nelson's fault, it's by someone named Ned Sublette. Willie's just singing the song.
